Petersburg, VA Ten Commandments monument
Photo by Robert V. Ritter (July 2017)

Donated by FOE: 1961

Current Location: Petersburg Aerie No. 882, 235 Franklin St. (since October 1967).

Original Location: Unknown

Scroll: “Dedicated To The Youth Of / Petersburg, Virginia / By / Petersburg Aerie No. 882 / Fraternal Order Of Eagles / 1961”

Notes: The Petersburg Eagles moved to their current location in October 1967—six years after they originally presented their Ten Commandments monument. It is not known whether the monument was orginally placed on public or private property.

Eventho the Eagles are displaying the Ten Commandments on their own property, the monument juxtaposed with the America flag creates the impression that the United States is a Christian nation—which it is not. We are a secular nation governed by the U.S. Constitution and the constitutions of the States.
